Early life
Alan Stanley Jones was born on 2nd November 1946 to parents Stan Jones and Alma O’Brien in Australia. His father was also a racing driver and won the 1959 Australian Grand Prix. He attended a boys’ boarding school in Melbourne.
From the start, he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a race car driver, and at the age of 15, he became a Kart Racing Champion.
In an effort to make his dream come true, he left for Europe in 1967 but came back disappointed at not being able to afford even a Formula Ford drive.
He returned in 1970 and was able to compete in Formula Three in 1971. He stayed in Formula three for the next two years.
In 1974 he made his F5000 debut and planned on continuing for the next year; however, luck was on his side, and Harry Stiller, British Formula three champion, signed Jones for Formula 1 team Hesketh.
Formula 1 Career
Hesketh, Surtee and Shadow (1975 – 1977)
He made his Formula 1 debut with Hesketh in the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. However, after only four races, the team dissolved, and Jones moved to Graham Hill’s team.
Jones partnered with John Surtees’s team for the 1976 season. It was an overall good season for him, and he took fourth place in the final Japan Grand Prix.
For the 1977 Formula 1 season, he was signed by the Shadow team as a replacement for Tom Pryce, who had died in an unfortunate accident in the South African Grand Prix.
He took his first victory in the Austrian Grand Prix, scoring a total 0f 22 points in the season and taking seventh place in the World Driver’s Championship.
Williams (1978 – 1981)
By 1977, Frank Williams had noticed Jones’ driving skills and signed him up for his Formula 1 team, Williams. He raced for Williams for the 1978 Formula 1 season. Behind the wheel on the Williams FW07, he achieved his best result that season by taking runners-up in the United States Grand Prix. He finished the season by taking third place in the World Driver’s Championship. His road to success had finally begun.
For the 1980 Formula 1 season, he gave it his best and took the podium ten times, winning a total of seven races, including Argentina, France, Britain, Canada and the USA. He beat the likes of Nelson Piquet by 13 points in the Championship standings, becoming the world’s second Australian F1 Champion, the first being Sir Jack Brabham.
He had a strong opponent for the 1981 season in the form of Argentina’s fellow racer, Carlos Reutemann. Even though Jones had a good season, his intense rivalry cost him the Championship, and he took third place in the World Driver’s Championship, resulting in Piquet winning the Championship.
After winning the Championship in 1980, Jones and Williams competed in the then non-championship Australian Grand Prix at Calder Park, resulting in Jones winning it just like his father, Stan Jones.
He retired from Formula 1 after the 1981 season, where he had managed to win in Las Vegas.
Formula 1 Comeback
After announcing his retirement, he decided to return to his homeland and become a farmer; however, he was called for a one-off ride with Arrows in the 1983 US Grand Prix West. However, Jones had a lack of interest, and it showed in his driving.
He made a full-time comeback in 1985 with the newly created Team Haas, whose first driver was Jones. The team made its debut at the 1985 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Driving the new Lola THL1, he had to retire after only 6 laps because of a blown engine.
For the 1986 season with Haas, he was partnered with the French driver Patrick Tambay. However, the season was unsuccessful mainly because of the Ford V6 engine’s lack of power. By the end of the 1986 season, the fiery Australian hanged his racing gloves permanently.
During his Formula 1 career, Jones won 12 races, 6 pole positions and one World Championship.
