Sergio Perez's Early Life

Sergio Perez came into the world on January 26, 1990, in Guadalajara, Jalisco. He is the youngest son of Antonio Perez Garibay and Marilu Mendoza de Perez. The Mexican driver is prominently known as “Checo” in the Formula One paddock.

Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez, like various of his partners, started his racing career at a very youthful age in Karting. At an age of six years old, Checo completed his first season in second spot overall with four victories in his class.

In 2005, he competed in the Formula BMW ADAC arrangement where he drove for Team Rosberg. He finished 14th, but came back strongly to finish 6th the following year.

2007, he moved to the British Formula 3 Championship where he competed in the national class and won the title. In 2008, he finished fourth in the standings and moved up to the international premiere class.

The Mexican raced in 2008-09 in the GP2 Asia series alongside Russian Vitaly Petrov and finished seventh. He raced in the GP2 series in 2010, where he finished second to Pastor Maldonado and ahead of Jules Bianchi.

It wasn’t until 2011 that Sergio Perez made his debut in Formula One with Sauber. He had an outstanding rookie season and showed sparks of brilliance. He had a rough first year at the top level, finishing 16th in the Drivers’ Championship. However, the next year was much better, as he took three impressive podiums.

Despite his long history with Ferrari, Checo made the decision to join McLaren in 2013. After struggling through 2013 in an uncompetitive vehicle, Checo switched teams in 2014 and settled into a spot with the Force India squad, where he would stay until 2020. Checo’s seven years with the Silverstone-based team were marked by frequent top-ten results in the Drivers’ Championship thanks to his ability to make the most of every chance.

His exceptional tactical understanding and the self-discipline to maintain his tyres made him a constant danger whenever chaos broke out.

Checo’s talent for making the most of available resources is what ultimately led to his 2021 contract with Red Bull Racing.

The Mexican driver was signed in to compete alongside Max Verstappen after his success in 2020, and he quickly showed his worth by finishing fourth in the driver standings while also claiming one victory and five podium finishes in his first season with the team.

If you ask his team, Checo’s best moment was in the finals in Abu Dhabi in 2021 season. Where the Mexican held off multiple attacks from Lewis Hamilton thanks to a great defensive drive on worn-out tyres. This made it possible for Max Verstappen to close the gap and challenge Hamilton for the lead, which led to Verstappen’s first F1 world championship.

2022 season has especially been great for Checo’s career and his team. In 17 races he has had performed above par alongside his teammate Max Verstappen. He is currently 3rd in the championship standings and is looking good to improve on that by the end of the season. He has also had a great qualifying record this year, with an average grid position of 4.88. This puts him in a great position to challenge for wins and podiums in the remaining races.
