Early life
Nigel Ernest James Mansell was born in Upton – on- Severn in the heart of the UK to parents Eric and Joyce Mansell on August 8th, 1953. He has 3 other siblings. He grew up in Birmingham’s Hall Green district. From a young age, he was competitive as well as confident in what he did.
He was passionate about speed, and his father would take him to local kart track races. When he finally got his own kart, he didn’t stop to beat all his fellow drivers. At the age of 10, he got his license, and he won his first race at age 14.
Early Career
He soon realized that to fulfill his dream of becoming an F1 driver, he had to be a part of British Formula Ford or Formula 3.
He took a one-day lesson in Formula Ford and went on to win his first race in it and eventually became Formula Ford Champion in 1977.
In 1978 he began racing in Formula 3. He raced in Formula 3 for the next two years. His driving skills were noticed by the owner of Lotus, and he was hired as a test driver for Formula 1.

Mansell made his first Formula 1 debut in the Australian Grand Prix in 1980 for the Norfolk-based Formula One team, Lotus. Unfortunately, his first three races didn’t go well, with the first leaving him burnt, an engine failure and an accident in the second and third. This meant he failed to qualify.
